Marie-Claude Deshayes-Rodriguez invents, through the technique of high-warp tapestry, her own language but also her own myths.
Her challenge is to capture some of the stories from ancient mythology and themes from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, while deflecting their original sense and, instead, offering beautiful scenes that emphasize the positive moments when Life triumphs.

Argus threatened by Hermès – Tapestry of high lice- 2015 – 42 cm x43 cm

Even when depicting the human body, landscape still remains her primary subject. The artist sees the world as a myth in itself: elusive, hostile, wonderful, an entity that exceeds humanity, that puts Man in his rightful place.

It is rare today to see a contemporary exhibition featuring tapestries created entirely by an artist that are unique works, and not something issue by a manufacturer.

Tapestry is a thread that becomes an image, a language, a message, a form of communication. Motifs and images are symbolic fragments of languages, that in one hand mirror the world around us, and on the other hand they are used as elements in new visions, new compositions or simply to inform. In other words, signs become fundamental elements of all languages, used to compose with also our myths and metaphors.

Weaving is one of Man’s most ancient activities. Fabric has played an intimate role in human history, it accompanies one’s life in the form of protective of decorative clothing. Like weaving, high-warp tapestry was born l’entrecroisement de fils. This particular technique brings out images and constitutes a language in itself. The combination of fibers of wool, silk, flax, cotton, hemp… transmit a message and constitute a sort of symbolic reflection of the world.

The work of Marie-Claude Deshayes-Rodriguez does find its limit solely in aesthetics. Through a personal language, she transforms ancient myths into new propositions. The essential purpose of a myth is to bring out a new meaning associated with a new aesthetic proposal.

In her other works, which continue on in a woven medium, she pursues her search for meaning using other techniques and materials.  The construction of this work consists of applying the cut fabric upon a base where they are then embroidered. New life is thus given to fabrics that already have their own histories: ties, scarfs, fragments of clothes or furniture. In this fabric, these bearers of unknown stories, the artist develops a dialogue whose words are of texture and colour. In these boxes, she places these three-dimensional figures of fabric and metal wire, as she continues her exploration of mythology…
