For two months – in two parts –<\/p>\n\n\n\n

M\u00e9moire de l’Avenir (MDA)   |     Humanit\u00e9s, Arts et Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 (HAS)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

brings together women artists from diverse backgrounds,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

working across various mediums of expression,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to highlight their invaluable contributions<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to society. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

weaving connections between past events,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

their historical documentation,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and their contemporary resonance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

An informal collective of like-minded creators,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the W.A.R.S. (Women Artists Reshaping Society),<\/p>\n\n\n\n

emerged during the vibrant 1980s,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

one of the most transformative periods in New York’s cultural history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At that time, the Lower East Side was a true laboratory of artistic innovation,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

an environment where hundreds of abandoned buildings and vacant urban spaces
became grounds for radical experimentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These women challenged the realities of their time, including the devastating pandemic (AIDS),<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and the mainstream art world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The revolutionary work of these artists blossomed in alternative cultural centers<\/p>\n\n\n\n

such as ABC No Rio, the Sculpture Garden, the Salon d\u2019A on Broome Street, Shalom Neuman\u2019s studio,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Fusion Arts, Jim C, Freddy the Dreamer, No Se No, among others\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These artists continue to work today,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A pioneer in the arts, Arleen Schloss founded The A Space, an interdisciplinary loft in New York that became a central hub for musicians, visual artists, performers, filmmakers, and video artists from the East Village. Active since the 1970s as a performance artist, Schloss also directed and organized numerous art events in Lower Manhattan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She co-organized exhibitions at Danceteria and Storefront for Art and Architecture, launching the careers of many artists and performers through The A’s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 1990s, A\u2019s Wave became a platform dedicated to digital media and web-based works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A multidisciplinary artist and prolific creator, she works with a variety of mediums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A conceptual artist, writer, and philosopher, her work spans fine arts, digital media, environmental activism, and social sculpture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a PhD from the University of California, Irvine, she has built a multidisciplinary career combining art, activism, and education. Notable projects include Tobey Crockett’s Wild Frontier, a 3D virtual world supported by a NYFA grant, and YES 2 EARTH NOW, an artistic and humorous campaign aimed at raising environmental awareness and encouraging community self-reliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advocating for the concept of “participatory transformation,” her practice encompasses performance, sacred theater, and critique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

is an American painter, poet, and community activist who lives and works in New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She creates intensely saturated compositions, using images as tropes: symbolic metaphors that are not meant to be realistic representations but to form the elements of a deeply American artistic vocabulary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her works reflect a love for the ongoing relationship between humans and the natural world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andrea Legge<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her work expresses a desire to respond to the commodification, capitalization, and ongoing destruction of nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1998, she earned a Master of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in New York. She then co-founded Legge Lewis Legge LLC (LLL), a collaborative studio dedicated to public art and design. LLL’s projects have been awarded numerous design and architecture prizes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also continues a solo practice. In 2022, she conducted research in Norway during an Art and Science expedition with the Arctic Circle residency, supported by the Canada Council for the Arts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A dedicated educator, she teaches woodworking to children at a progressive private school in Greenwich Village, New York, where Jackson Pollock once taught.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She studied psychology, theater, and fine arts, drawing inspiration from Jay DeFeo and the feminist Beat Generation. She worked as an assistant for Mary Beth Edelson as well as for Marian Zazeela and La Monte Young at the Eternal Theatre of Music of the Dia Art Foundation. Active in the Lower East Side art scene, she launched her clothing and accessories line, What Are You Wearing To The Revolution?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A passionate surfer, mother, traveler, artist, and photographer, she has explored numerous countries, studying various art forms and cultures. From 1983 to 1987, she extensively documented the raw energy of the Rivington School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Working both above and below water, her unexpected images reveal the vitality of nature and free individuals through an unusual blend of mediums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her work is inspired by her Scandinavian upbringing with the vivid colors of the ocean, mixed with her immersion in the urban subculture of the 1980s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She is also involved with the Surfrider Foundation, a nonprofit environmental organization dedicated to protecting waters and beaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choreographer, dancer, and teacher, founder of LIFEDANCE, she has taught at universities such as Keimyung, UW\/Madison, and George Washington. Her works have been presented in New York (92nd Street Y, Alvin Ailey, La Mama, The Kitchen) and at Squid Studio, which she directed from 1994 to 2005.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As an art therapist with the Organization of Independent Artists in 1980 and 1981, she led RAM STUDIO in Harlem, New York, where she printed and bound artists’ books and printed editions while teaching the city’s youth. Gloria McLean<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choreographer, dancer, and teacher. Alongside her career with Erick Hawkins Dance Co (1982-1993), she founded LIFEDANCE, a wholistic vision of life and art, presenting work in New York (92nd Street Y, Alvin Ailey, La Mama, The Kitchen) and internationally (Japan, China, Korea, Ireland, France, Germany). She has taught at universities such as Keimyung, UW\/Madison, and George Washington; ran Squid Studio from 1994 to 2005 in NYC and now at Squid Farm in Andes, NY offering workshops, performances and events with partner sculptor Ken Hiratsuka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Produced at ADF and in international festivals, her video Twice Marked<\/em> was exhibited at the Brattleboro Museum (2008) and at ADF (2009).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jacques-Elie Chabert<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A digital pioneer and multimedia artist, Jacques-Elie Chabert designed JEF (Journal \u00c9lectronique Fran\u00e7ais), the first electronic news platform on Minitel in France. He collaborated with agencies such as Publicis, Siquier Courselles, and Alice for clients like 20th Century Fox, Herm\u00e8s, Apple, EDF, and L\u2019Or\u00e9al. Between 1981 and 1985, he published four interactive Minitel novels, including L\u2019Objet Perdu for the Centre Pompidou.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the 1986 Venice Biennale, he presented an interactive installation before showcasing Mur Image in East Berlin. Before the advent of the web, he introduced a networked graphic imaging course at ENSAD (1987). He created the French Revolution Bicentennial campaign (1989) and won an award at the Marseille Scientific Film Festival (1995). Founder of the local TV channel LALOCALE (1999-2015), he launched PARI (Panafrican Applied Research Initiative) and Gooroo Mobility Group, a tech startup, in 2019.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Stuart makes his directorial debut with It\u2019s A to Z: The Art of Arleen Schloss. He previously served as associate producer for two independent feature films. Followers (2000), the first of the two, received national distribution by Castle Hill Productions and he later served as the associate producer for Shockwave, Darkside (2014), an independent science fiction film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An adjunct professor at Montclair State University\u2019s School of Communication and Media in Montclair, N.J, Stuart enjoys writing for and performing in storytelling and improv shows. He has performed at The Magnet Theater and the Greenwich Village Comedy Club in New York City. He began his career in public relations promoting independent films, TV specials, and Broadway shows and holds a B.A. from American University and an M.A. from The New School.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
